Paradise
Paradise
How precious are the tranquil times that come
And bring relief from all the stress and rush.
How rare these have become, for most of us,
As lethal madnesses pervade our worlds.
But still, outsides the war-zones, there's the dawn
With softest light, the morning bold and bright,
And then the noon and afternoon, and dusk
That calls to rest—and brings the stars to night.
For some at least, there still are meets at times
With friends and kin that bring back memories,
For others, only what remains in mind,
Reminding them of hell and paradise.
I still retain my faith that’s shorn of creeds—
The faith primeval in the truth and right—
That hears, amidst the cruelties, the voice
That calls to those who heal and those who fight.

Backyard in the Northern Summer
Backyard in the Northern Summer
The backyard’s long remained untouched,
Except by cats, raccoons,
Beneath, beside the trees.
The many shades of green ascend
Towards a sky of blue.
The sun is almost overhead
And bathes us with its brilliance.
In tropic climes, the summers could
Be times of misery.
In northern lands, we welcome them
For the blessings summers bring—
Relief from winter's cold and dark,
Relief from snow and rain—
A chance to see the sunshine and
To feel its warmth again.
******
And there, within the dappled shade
Where weeds and grasses grow,
The breeze is moving shadows, leaves
Amidst the green and coolth.
Little beings shelter there,
Living out their lives.
And some are roused, and others sleep,
As sun traverses sky.
******
A life of work and hurried haste,
Of rarely seeing the sky,
And now—this languor in the sun
In a backyard, wild, untended—
Where hummingbirds at times are seen
And squirrels, jays compete,
And one can savor bits of peace,
While aged and in defeat.

Peace and War
Peace and War
.
The silence and the summer sun
On California’s coast,
The rustling of the leaves of trees,
The distant, passing train,
.
The letting go of everything
Of which I once could boast,
The touching by the cooling breeze,
The easing of the strain,
.
The blue of sky, the green of leaves,
The warmth of sun on skin,
The calling of the bird I hear,
The sway of grasses tall—
.
These all combine and so provide,
Within this world of sin,
A music of the eye and ear
That brings relief to all.
.
******
.
And yet, the all-devouring greed
Will rarely pause to taste
Of all of this that beings need,
While laying more to waste.
.
So wealth will flow, accumulate,
And bombs will fall and burst,
As burnings rise, along with hate,
And children die of thirst.
.
******
.
I call to those who've closed their blinds
To open windows wide
And look, with open minds and hearts,
Across the harsh divide—
.
To see that children, everywhere,
And women, are the same—
That sentients feel of grief and pain,
As humans should of shame.

The Myriad Stars
The Myriad Stars
.
On moonless desert nights, the stars are seen
As countless fires burning in the sky—
As beacons, signals from the ancient past,
So distant, cold—yet timeless and serene,
Unchanged, unbothered through our puny spans.
.
******
.
The sun, the moon, the planets, and the stars
Appear to us as watchers in the sky.
But this is mere appearance, nothing more.
So all the histories of life on Earth
And other planets, scattered through the vast,
Go unobserved, for all those “eyes” are just
As blind, to all, as yours and mine can be
To all but what may cross, by chance, our paths.
.
And yet, each part of space and time appears
To listen and to talk to other parts—
So every action is indeed observed
And every word I write and every thought
And everything you sense and feel is part
Of something that transcends both “you” and “I”.
We each have risen up like ripples from
A sea in which we will, in turn, subside.
.
* * * * * *
.
So birth and death and all that’s in-between
Are tiny parts within a fluid whole
Where mind and matter, light and feeling mix,
As planets whirl in orbits ‘round their suns,
Within whose innards tiny atoms fuse
To light the giant fires that we perceive
On looking up at night as all those lights
Uncountable—the distant, burning stars.
.
* * * * * *
.
And some believe our lives are governed by
The stars, as seasons of the year are tied
To what appears to be that moving dome
That does its stately circles, year by year.
And others, such as me, may disbelieve
And yet observe the tides of sun and moon
And sense the rhythms of the lungs and heart.
Each cycle is, of other cycles, part.
.
The stars are born and die, like you and I—
And each of us is like a tiny whorl,
Within which whirl a zillion other whorls.
And so, in fractal fashion, each of us
Reflects the whirling of the universe.
And so the dervishes go ’round—and deep,
As yogis hold their poses, slowly move,
And Tai Chi masters dance in sensing arcs.
.
******
.
On desert nights we still can see those lights—
Those eyes that seem to watch our every move—
That see us kill and die in senseless wars—
That see the species, empires wax and wane—
Beneath the heavens with their myriad stars.

Music?
Music?
Does music tell us of a culture’s soul?
If so, then ours is torn and wracked indeed
With rage, frustration—lacking bliss and peace,
Reflecting, darkly, worlds of fear and greed.
If music turns to a tool for torture, then
What chance is there for healing, born of Zen?
Our music once had grace, with Nature's sounds,
The moods of seasons and of times of day.
These touched the heart and gently moved the soul,
And so returned us towards the peaceful way.
But now, of all of this, there's little trace.
Its guns and pistons lead away from grace.
We should not rush to blame the music. It
Is but a mirror of the world we've built.
We’re disconnected from the rest of life—
Absorbed in self, avoiding silence, guilt.
And so we deafen ears and dazzle eyes.
Our soul's disturbance speaks in music’s guise.

Conscience and Choice / No Karma-Phala
Conscience and Choice / No Karma-Phala
There is no punishment, reward—
In this life or another.
There is no heaven that awaits
The ones who do what’s right.
There is no hell in which we’ll burn
For doing what is wrong.
There are no gods with registers
Observing what we do.
There are no records being kept
Of actions good and bad.
******
The predator can kill its prey,
The parasite its host.
No ethics or morality
Constrains our human wars.
There is no nation on this Earth
Whose hands are free of blood.
The ones with wealth and power make
The laws by which we’re ruled.
Our histories are filled with lies.
The news we get is false.
******
So is there wrong? And is there right?
And is there good and bad?
There is a conscience—that is heard
Or not—that tells us this.
It channels our capacities
For quiet, inner sight.
It’s empathy and fairness—
That say what’s right and wrong.
And some extend their circles
And others squeeze these tight.
******
We can choose to seek for justice
For others, not just selves.
We can choose to practice kindness
Towards all that lives and feels.
We can listen more to conscience
And do what soothes and heals.
It’s not for fear of punishment
Or hope for some reward
One seeks the path of justice
And keeps an open heart.
******
There is a choice for each of us
To make at every time.
At times, the choice is difficult
And pain may well result
From choosing what the conscience
May whisper to the heart.
Do not expect that others
Will sympathize or help.
We can listen to the others—
But do what conscience says.

Delight
Delight
Every time of day its own.
Each has been my friend and savior,
When I’ve wandered, all alone.
Though I’ve always been a loner,
Once with books but now with none,
When I’ve stepped outside a dwelling,
I have rarely felt I’m one.
Earth and sky have sent their greetings,
Trees and clouds and slanting sun.
I have watched their swifter changes
And their seasons, one by one.
******
The world within us and the one
Around us pulse with rhythmic flows.
So the daily, monthly cycles.
So the year that comes and goes.
When, at dawn, the sun arises,
Hope awakens, gives us life.
When, at dusk, the night advances,
Souls retire from stress and strife.
So the seasons come and go—
Summer sun and winter snow—
The smile of spring, the mellow autumn—
Each in time within the flow.

The Scattered Greens
The Scattered Greens
Within the cities, with their asphalt roads
And concrete sidewalks, hard on aging feet,
With neither giving sustenance to souls,
I've sought my solace in the scattered greens.
I've breathed the less-polluted air—with scents
Of Nature mixed with vents from vehicles.
The city's clamor paused, for just a while,
Or somehow let the mind transform its din—
As all the madness, with its press and rush
Receded, so one savored peace at last.
In time, the sounds of passing cars were changed
To those of waves upon a pleasant shore,
And drones of airplanes high above became
The muted roars of distant wind and surf—
As if one heard again the breath of Earth.
******
And so today, on an autumn afternoon,
Afar from home—and yet at home again—
I've found a bench and occupied a seat—
As slanting golden sun delights a pine
And youths with trailing shadows dance within
A court—that’s painted blue and white and green,
Reminding one of sky and earth serene—
To take their turns at arcing spheres at hoops.
Towards the west, the sunlight silhouettes
A group of women, moving with their dogs.
And from behind them, I can hear the cries
Of children playing in the autumn sun.
A time to pause, to just relax and be—
With all the greens of plants, the blues of sky,
With dogs and humans, prancing in the sun—
Or simply soaking in the wash of light.
A time to find—or glimpse again—that me
That I had lost among the cities’ streets—
And now appears to look at me and smile.
******
I know, as sunset yields to dusk and then—
With streetlights coming on like stars and just
That fading glow that tinges western skies,
The humans here will melt away and I
Will hear the crickets start their choruses.
And so the cycles of the days persist
Within the cities—in their remnant greens.
And this has been a source of peace to me—
And surely others, sailing urban seas.

Boyhood in Kolkata
Boyhood in Kolkata
Though often ill in body, I absorbed,
As children do, the cultures all around—
The near ones more, the far ones less—and yet,
When still a child, I felt a growing sense
Of some detachment. I could see the plays
In which the humans seemed to act, in roles
With which they seemed to merge their inner selves.
And these, I sensed, were really all the same—
For humans, dogs and cats—and ants and trees.
Begun reflecting—perhaps when I was ill
And so alone, with time enough to think—
And being also lacking then in drives
For recognition, power or other things—
And seeing also, in the city’s mire,
How people suffered, while, above the streets,
The clouds rose high and sailed across the blue—
As seasons came and seasons went in turn—
As beings did, who acted out their plays.
